Retie loose shoelaces during the school day

3-5, 6-8OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who can tie their shoes at a practice station but walk around with laces dragging during the day. The target is noticing and retying, not learning the knot. Present levels and the OT's observation of the routine, not grade or age, decide whether this template fits.

Baseline
For two weeks, note each time a lace was untied and whether the student retied it, and how long it stayed loose. Confirm at a practice station that the student can tie the bow.
Tips
Count an opportunity each time a lace is seen untied. Elastic laces or slip-on shoes are a fair family choice and make the goal unnecessary; respect that decision. Prompt privately so it does not draw attention.
Limits
Measures retying, not the tying skill itself. Adults will miss some untied laces, so data undercount opportunities.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, when one of their shoelaces comes untied during the school day, the student will stop at a safe spot, tie the lace in a bow, and double knot it before an adult mentions it in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, on 3 of 4 consecutive weekly checks, as measured by direct observation collected each time a lace comes untied, summarized weekly.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Dressing & Clothing Management.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
