Add or remove a layer for comfort
When to use this goal
For students who stay in a heavy coat in a warm room or stay outside in a T-shirt in the cold without changing what they wear. Fits when the student can take a sweatshirt or jacket on and off. Present levels and the OT's observation of the routine, not grade or age, decide whether this template fits.
- Baseline
- List the predictable temperature changes in the student's day (recess, the gym, a warm classroom) and record for two weeks whether the student changed a layer at each. Note signs of discomfort such as sweating or shivering.
- Tips
- Some students do not notice body temperature easily; pair this with interoception work with the OT. Score an opportunity at each planned temperature change. Comfort is the student's call: if they say they feel fine and show no signs of discomfort, do not score a miss.
- Limits
- Body temperature signals vary; adults judge the opportunity from the setting and visible signs. Not for students with a medical temperature plan, which the nurse leads.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, when moving between indoors and outdoors with a change in temperature, the student will notice they are too hot or too cold and add or take off a layer before an adult prompts in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, on 3 of 4 consecutive weekly checks, as measured by direct observation collected at planned temperature changes, summarized weekly.

- Record up to 5 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
