Check expiration dates on food
When to use this goal
For students who prepare snacks or meals and who eat or use food without checking the date. Present levels in reading dates in number and word formats decide fit. Practice items are real packages, with expired ones kept separate and unopened.
- Baseline
- Use 10 packages, about half past date. Score each judgment, and record whether the student found the date at all; dates are often printed small or on the bottom.
- Tips
- Teach the formats seen most (OCT 24, 10/24/26, 2026-10-24). Explain the difference between best-by and use-by in plain words. Leftovers need a different rule (label with the date made).
- Limits
- Dates do not tell whether food is spoiled; teach looking and smelling rules with care. Does not cover medication expiration.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given 10 food packages with dates in different formats and today's date posted, the student will find the date on each package and sort it as okay to use or past the date independently with at least 90% accuracy on packages judged, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.
Baseline: 30% accuracy.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
