Drink water at planned hydration times

When to use this goal

For students whose health plan calls for regular fluids (for example, for kidney, bladder, bowel, or heat-related needs) and who forget to drink unless an adult hands them a cup. Base the choice on the health plan's fluid schedule and present levels.

Baseline
For one to two weeks, count how many planned drinks the student took without an adult handing them a drink. The marked bottle is a simple permanent record. Check the fluid schedule with the nurse before setting a target.
Tips
The target number of drinks comes from the health plan, not the IEP team. Teachers allow the bottle at the desk and restroom trips that follow. Teach the student to tell the nurse when the bottle is empty or they feel unwell.
Limits
The count shows drinks taken, not the amount; the marked bottle shows amounts roughly. Some conditions limit fluids; follow the plan exactly. This goal never replaces the individualized health plan, medication orders, or an emergency action plan; the nurse, the family, and the student's health care provider decide care, and the goal follows their plan.

Something an adult can see, count or time.

Support

Support allowed

Criterion

Number of times a defined behavior occurs during a set observation period.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Keep every observation the same length.

Criterion wording

Data collection

Each occurrence of a clearly defined behavior is tallied during a fixed observation period.

How often data are collected
Mastery rule

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during the school day, with a marked water bottle showing the planned drinking times, the student will drink from their water bottle to the next marked line at each planned time independently at least 5 times per school day, on 4 of 5 consecutive school days, as measured by frequency recording collected daily, from the bottle marks or hydration card.

Baseline: 1 times per school day.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Frequency fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Frequency (event) recording gives frequency data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Health & Self-Management.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
