Sample a new activity and rate it

When to use this goal

For students with few leisure interests who refuse anything new, so their free time is narrow. Present levels decide fit. Sampling builds a real interest list from the student's own ratings; liking or not liking is never scored.

Baseline
Offer 4 new activities over 4 weeks and record whether the student tried each for the agreed time and gave a rating. Keep the agreed time short (a few minutes) so trying is possible. Start from an interest inventory with the student and family, and offer age-matched choices; a preferred repetitive activity is a valid way to relax, not a problem to fix.
Tips
Score an opportunity as met when the student tried for the agreed time and rated it, whatever the rating. Add "like" activities to the student's choice board or leisure plan. The student can stop early by saying so; that is data, not refusal.
Limits
Ratings can change with mood; resample favorites later. Does not measure doing the activity on their own; follow up with duration or routine goals.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during a weekly leisure sampling time with one new activity offered (a craft, a game, a song, a sport skill), the student will try the new activity for the agreed short time and rate it on a three-point like scale independently in at least 3 of 4 opportunities, in 3 of 4 consecutive monthly reviews, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.

Baseline: 1 of 4 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Leisure & Recreation.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
