Use work breaks for chosen leisure
When to use this goal
For transition students in work placements who spend breaks wandering, waiting at their station, or asking the job coach what to do. Base the choice on job coach observation. A portable leisure option (music, a puzzle book, a phone game, a snack and a magazine) makes breaks restful.
- Baseline
- The job coach times 3 to 5 breaks: minutes using a chosen leisure activity, and what the student did otherwise. Check break room rules. Start from an interest inventory with the student and family, and offer age-matched choices; a preferred repetitive activity is a valid way to relax, not a problem to fix.
- Tips
- Count only the minutes of chosen leisure; eating and restroom time can be included if the student chose them. Returning on time is part of the skill; note late returns.
- Limits
- Break rules vary by employer. Measures leisure at breaks, not social time with coworkers.
