Sit and attend during circle time
When to use this goal
Fits young children who leave the circle, lie down, or stop taking part within the first minute or two, while the group continues for 10 to 15 minutes. Duration data from several circle times decide the starting target; many children begin at 2 or 3 minutes.
- Baseline
- Time from the start of circle to the first time the child leaves the spot or stops taking part for more than 30 seconds, on 3 to 5 circle times. Record the circle's total length and what was happening when the child left (a long story, a waiting turn), which tells you what to shorten or add.
- Tips
- Define attending in writing by what the child does (in the circle area, joining or following the activity in their usual way); don't require eye contact or a set posture. Seat the child where the teacher can reach them. Shorten the circle or give the child a job (holding a prop) to build time, and lengthen as data rise.
- Limits
- Sitting is not the same as learning from the circle; add a participation measure (fn-pk-005) when sitting is steady. Children with sensory needs may attend better standing or on a wobble seat; adjust the behavior wording.
