Transition between classroom activities within a time limit
When to use this goal
For students who do start when the signal is given but take many minutes to put one thing away, get the next out, and be ready, so instruction starts without them. Time the student and two classmates during baseline; that comparison and present levels set the target.
- Baseline
- Time from the end of the signal to the moment the student is seated with the next materials, across 5 transitions. Time two classmates during the same transitions to set the comparison. Note transitions that include a trip to the cubby or a materials swap, which take longer for everyone.
- Tips
- Define ready in writing (seated, correct materials out, nothing from the last activity on the desk). Keep the activities paired the same way during baseline and progress checks when possible. If the student does not start at all, use the latency template (fn-rt-005) instead.
- Limits
- Duration hides which part of the transition is slow. Teachers who begin instruction before every student is ready give the student less reason to hurry; agree on how the class transition itself runs.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, when the teacher signals a change from one in-class activity to the next, such as from reading to math, the student will complete the transition and be seated with the materials for the next activity independently within 2 minutes, on 4 of 5 consecutive observed transitions, as measured by duration recording collected two transitions per day, three days per week.
Baseline: 6 minutes.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Duration fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Duration recording gives duration data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Functional Routines.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Start timing when the defined behavior begins and stop when it ends, using the definitions agreed by the team.
- The goal is reached when duration is at or below the target (2 minutes).
- Note interruptions that weren't caused by the student.
