Check a phone calendar for the next class

When to use this goal

For middle and high school students with a rotating or changing schedule who carry a phone or school device and ask adults where to go next. Base it on present levels in reading short entries and in device use; the calendar is set up with the student and family.

Baseline
Record each passing period for 3 days: did the student check the calendar and arrive at the right room without asking an adult. Note whether the student checked a paper schedule instead; that is a good sign, but count only the planned tool.
Tips
Set the calendar up together so the student knows where entries come from. Color-code by building wing. Teach what to do when the calendar and a teacher's announcement disagree. Follow school device and phone rules.
Limits
Phone policies may limit use between classes; get a written exception in the IEP if needed. Does not measure arriving on time; add a time target if lateness is the need.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, at each passing period, given a phone or school device with the class schedule entered in a calendar app, the student will open the calendar, read the next entry, and go to that class or location independently in at least 5 of 6 opportunities, on 4 of 5 observed days, as measured by direct observation collected two days per week, scoring each passing period.

Baseline: 2 of 6 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Functional Routines.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
