Use scheduled breaks for restroom and water needs
When to use this goal
For students who leave class for the restroom or water several times during instruction and who have no medical reason to do so (confirm with the nurse). Base the choice on a baseline count of exits; restroom access must never be denied to meet the goal.
- Baseline
- Count exits during instruction for 5 days, noting the time, the reason given, and whether a break had just happened. Rule out medical reasons with the nurse and family before setting a target; a student with a health need gets access, not a goal.
- Tips
- Add scheduled breaks before long blocks so the student has a real opportunity to use them. The goal counts exits during instruction; emergencies are always allowed and are noted, not punished. Pair with teaching the student to ask quietly at a transition.
- Limits
- Counting exits can feel punitive; frame the data as scheduling, not restriction, and review it with the student. Medical, anxiety, or sensory reasons for leaving call for a different plan.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during a class period with a scheduled break at the start, with the restroom and water fountain available then, the student will reduce leaving the classroom for the restroom or water during direct instruction to no more than 1 time per school day, on 4 of 5 consecutive school days, as measured by frequency recording collected daily.
Baseline: 4 times per school day.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Frequency fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Frequency (event) recording gives frequency data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about School-Related Independence.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Count each occurrence of the defined behavior per school day.
- Keep the observation length the same each session. If it varies, compare rate per minute, not raw counts.
- Write the behavior definition at the top of the sheet so all data collectors count the same thing.
