Use the bathroom before leaving for an outing

K-2, 3-5OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who toilet at school but have accidents on the bus, on field trips, or at recess because they skip the bathroom before leaving. Base the choice on accident logs by setting. Fits students who use the toilet on their own once they get there.

Baseline
For two weeks, log each departure (recess, lunch, bus, trip), whether the student used the bathroom first, and any accident during the outing. Accidents usually cluster at one or two departures; start the goal there.
Tips
Build the bathroom stop into the class routine before departures so it is not singled out. Score each departure as one opportunity. The student may decline if they truly do not need to go, but should try; record a tried-and-nothing as met.
Limits
Does not cover finding restrooms during the outing itself; see fn-toi-024 for community restrooms. Long bus rides may need a planned stop in the plan regardless of this goal.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, before recess, lunch, a bus ride, or a field trip departure, the student will go to the bathroom and use the toilet before the group leaves independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, on 4 of 5 observed days, as measured by direct observation collected daily at the main departures.

Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Toileting.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
