Use a private signal for restroom breaks
When to use this goal
For upper elementary and middle school students who need more restroom trips than classmates (because of a health need or a toileting plan) and who avoid going rather than ask in front of peers. Base the choice on teacher logs and the student's own report. Written with the student, who chooses the signal.
- Baseline
- Ask the student, privately, how often they needed to go and did not, and what got in the way. Teachers log for two weeks when the student left, how they asked, and any near-accidents or long waits. The student's own log can count as data if they choose to keep one.
- Tips
- Every teacher and substitute must honor the signal without questions. Score each need as met when the student used the signal and went, rather than waiting or holding. Review weekly with the student, who may change the signal.
- Limits
- Opportunities come partly from the student's own report, which is honest only when the student trusts the team; keep it judgment-free. Medical urgency needs a health plan with a standing pass.

- Record up to 6 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
