Keep personal phone use to break times

9-12FrequencyTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students whose personal phone use during work time draws supervisor concern. Present levels and the reason for checking (boredom, anxiety, habit, family contact) decide supports; pair with a plan for checking at breaks.

Baseline
Count phone checks outside breaks over 3 shifts. Note why the student checks; if it is worry about family, set up a way for family to reach the site in an emergency.
Tips
Pair with a replacement: checking at every break and a clear emergency plan. Follow the site's real rule; some jobs allow phones. Never take the phone away as a consequence.
Limits
Counting phone checks needs close observation. Rules differ by site.

Criterion

Number of times a defined behavior occurs during a set observation period.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Keep every observation the same length.

Data collection

Each occurrence of a clearly defined behavior is tallied during a fixed observation period.

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during a work-based learning shift, with the site's phone rule posted and scheduled breaks, the student will reduce checking the personal phone during work time outside of breaks to no more than 1 time per 2-hour work period, with the phone stored in a pocket or locker and checked at each break, on 4 of 5 consecutive shifts, as measured by frequency recording collected at each shift.

Baseline: 6 times per 2-hour work period.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Frequency fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Frequency (event) recording gives frequency data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Vocational & Work Readiness.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
