Read the safety signs posted at a job site

When to use this goal

For students starting work-based learning who walk past workplace signs (hard hat area, forklift traffic, hot surface, authorized personnel only) without reading them or acting on them. Present levels in reading environmental print and symbols, not grade, decide whether signs are read, matched to pictures, or explained aloud.

Baseline
Photograph the signs at the student's actual sites rather than using generic sets. Score the meaning and the action as separate items; many students can name a sign but not say what to do about it.
Tips
Use this to teach the signs; use fn-voc-072 to check that the student acts on them during a real shift. Hazard symbols on product labels are covered in science skills; this goal is for posted signs and placards at work.
Limits
Naming a sign in a probe does not show the student stops for it while busy. Sign sets differ by employer and industry, so rebuild the set when the placement changes.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given 10 photos of safety signs and hazard symbols posted at the student's current or planned job sites, the student will tell what each sign or symbol means and the action it calls for at that site independently with at least 90% accuracy on workplace safety signs, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.

Baseline: 40% accuracy.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Vocational & Work Readiness.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
