Stop and act on safety signs during a shift

When to use this goal

For students who can tell what workplace signs mean in practice but walk through a closed area, past a wet floor sign, or into a hard hat zone while working. Present levels in reading signs and in attention to the work setting decide fit.

Baseline
Map the signs on the student's usual route and record 6 encounters per shift. A temporary sign the student did not expect tells you more than a fixed sign passed every day.
Tips
Every encounter is the standard because a missed sign can mean injury. Set up planned temporary signs with the supervisor so there are enough chances to practice. Pairs with fn-voc-015 for site rules that are not posted.
Limits
Planned encounters may be easier than real ones. A student who misses a sign that marks real danger needs closer supervision right away, not only more data.

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

An adult observes and records the defined behavior during a specified activity.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during a work shift, each time the student reaches a posted safety sign or hazard placard on the route or at the station, the student will stop at the sign and carry out the action it calls for before continuing the task independently in 6 of 6 opportunities, across 3 consecutive shifts, as measured by direct observation collected at each shift, across six sign encounters.

Baseline: 2 of 6 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Vocational & Work Readiness.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
