Explain each equation step in words
When to use this goal
For students who reach correct answers by memorized moves but cannot explain why a step keeps the equation balanced, so they cannot fix their own errors. Present levels in solving the equation type decide fit.
- Baseline
- Score two explanations. If writing is a barrier, use the spoken version and record it. Many students can name the operation but not why both sides change.
- Tips
- Explaining steps supports state tests that ask students to justify. Spoken explanations count; record them. Pair with error analysis (ma-alg-020).
- Limits
- Explanations depend on language skills; a low score may reflect expressive language. The rubric scores reasons, not the solution.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given a solved equation of 3 to 4 steps and a two-column explanation sheet, the student will write or say a reason beside each step that names the operation done to both sides or the property used independently, earning a score of at least 7 out of 9 on a 3-row algebra explanation rubric scored 0 to 3 per row, on 3 of 4 consecutive scored explanations, as measured by a defined scoring rubric collected every two weeks.
Baseline: 2 out of 9 rubric points.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Rubric score fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Rubric scoring gives rubric score data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Algebra & Equations.
Met: Level of support. Defined.

Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score each sample with a 3-row algebra explanation rubric scored 0 to 3 per row. Attach or reference the rubric's score descriptors.
- Use the same prompt type and conditions for each scored sample.
- If two people score, check agreement on a few samples before relying on the data.
