Write facts within 10 on a timed probe
When to use this goal
For kindergarten and first-grade students, or older students still building their first facts, who solve facts within 10 correctly but slowly. Present levels in an untimed check of facts within 10 decide readiness; accuracy should be high before speed is the target.
- Baseline
- Give three probes on different days and use the median. Score digits correct, not problems, so partial progress shows. Note whether the student watches the operation sign; adding on a subtraction fact is a common error at this level.
- Tips
- Pair with a strategy goal for facts not yet known; speed practice on facts the student must count out builds counting speed, not recall. Students may say answers aloud if writing is slow.
- Limits
- Rate depends on writing speed. Probes within 10 and within 20 give different rates, so do not compare them on one graph.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given a 1-minute probe of mixed addition and subtraction facts with sums and starting numbers to 10, the student will write the answer to each fact independently at a rate of at least 20 digits correct per minute, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by timed probes collected weekly.
Baseline: 6 digits correct per minute.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Rate (per minute) fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Timed probes gives rate (per minute) data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Addition & Subtraction.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
