Write addition facts on a timed probe
Addition fact fluency
By the annual IEP review date, given a 2-minute probe of mixed addition facts with sums to 20 (total divided by 2 for the per-minute rate), the student will write the answer to each addition fact independently at a rate of at least 20 digits correct per minute, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by curriculum-based measurement probes collected weekly.
Use a taught strategy to solve unknown addition facts
Fact strategies (counting on, making ten)
By the annual IEP review date, when given a single-digit addition fact that the student does not yet recall automatically, the student will solve the fact by counting on from the larger addend independently in at least 8 of 10 opportunities, across 3 consecutive data collection sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected twice weekly.
Write multiplication facts on a timed probe
Multiplication fact fluency
By the annual IEP review date, given a 2-minute probe of mixed multiplication facts with factors 0 to 10 (total divided by 2 for the per-minute rate), the student will write the product for each fact independently at a rate of at least 25 digits correct per minute, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by curriculum-based measurement probes collected weekly.
Write division facts on a timed probe
Division fact fluency
By the annual IEP review date, given a 1-minute probe of division facts related to multiplication facts with factors 0 to 10, the student will write the quotient for each division fact independently at a rate of at least 15 problems correct per minute, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by timed probes collected weekly.
Number Sense Math
Recall partners of 10 on a timed probe
Composing and decomposing 10
By the annual IEP review date, given a 1-minute written probe of missing-part items such as 6 + __ = 10 and 10 = 3 + __, the student will write the missing number for each item independently at a rate of at least 22 correct responses per minute, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by timed probes collected weekly.
Math facts goals come from addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, and number sense. They target accurate and fluent recall of basic facts, often after the student understands the operation with objects or drawings. Fluency is measured with rate as digits correct per minute on timed probes, and early accuracy goals use percent correct with a fixed set of facts. Good goals name the fact set, such as sums to 10 or multiplication facts 0 to 5, and the probe length. Build accuracy first, then speed, and if timing causes anxiety or is not the barrier, use an accuracy goal with a fixed set. Strategy goals, like counting on or using known facts, help students who do not yet recall facts.

Frequently asked questions
How do I write a math fact fluency goal?
Name the fact set and the rate. For example: on a 2-minute mixed addition probe with sums to 20, the student will write answers at a rate of at least 30 digits correct per minute in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes.
Should math fact goals be timed?
Timed probes show fluency once a student is accurate. If the student is still inaccurate or timing is a barrier, start with an accuracy goal and add rate later.
