Recall partners of 10 on a timed probe

K-2, 3-5Rate (per minute)TemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who can find the partner of 10 with a model but are slow, so the make-ten strategy breaks down in larger problems. Present levels in finding the missing part with counters decide readiness.

Baseline
Give three probes on different days and use the median. Mix the position of the blank so the student cannot use a pattern. Note any pairs that are always slow or wrong.
Tips
Use the same probe length and format each week with items in a new random order. Pair with an addition strategy goal (making ten) when the pairs are being learned for that purpose.
Limits
Rate reflects writing speed on the written version; use the oral version when handwriting is slow. Does not measure using the pairs inside larger problems.

What the student will do

Something an adult can see, count or time.

Criterion

Count of correct responses per minute on a timed task.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Criterion wording

Data collection

A fixed-length timing (for example, 1 or 2 minutes) used to calculate a per-minute rate.

How often data are collected
Mastery rule

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given a 1-minute written probe of missing-part items such as 6 + __ = 10 and 10 = 3 + __, the student will write the missing number for each item independently at a rate of at least 22 correct responses per minute, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by timed probes collected weekly.

Baseline: 8 correct responses per minute.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Rate (per minute) fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Timed probes gives rate (per minute) data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Number Sense.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
