Measure a real box to find its volume
When to use this goal
For high school students in functional math, vocational, or life skills programs who need volume for real jobs: whether a storage bin holds enough, how much soil fills a planter, or which shipping box is larger. Present levels, not grade, decide whether a calculator and a template are part of the goal.
- Baseline
- Use three to five real tasks. Count an opportunity correct when the measurements are within the agreed tolerance (such as half an inch), the volume follows from them, and the answer to the task question is right.
- Tips
- Pairs with vocational tasks in shipping, retail stocking, or a school garden. Let the student use a calculator so the goal targets measuring and deciding.
- Limits
- Real containers have rounded edges and lids; agree on how to measure them. Measurement error can throw off the volume even when the method is right.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during a shipping, storage, or garden task with a real rectangular container, the student will measure the length, width, and height with a ruler or tape measure, multiply to find the volume, and use it to answer the task question independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weekly sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.
Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Geometry & Spatial Reasoning.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Record up to 5 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
