Write the related multiplication and division facts for an array

3-5Percent accuracyTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who learn 3 x 7 and 7 x 3 as separate facts, or who do not connect division to multiplication. Present levels should show the student can build or read an array.

Baseline
Score a family correct only when all four facts are right. The common error is placing the product in the wrong position in a division fact (6 / 24 = 4); note how often it occurs because it signals that the student does not yet see the product as the whole.
Tips
Physically rotating an array makes the commutative property obvious; do that before writing. Fact families cut the number of facts to memorize roughly in half, which is worth saying to the student.
Limits
Square facts (such as 5, 5, 25) have only two distinct facts; decide how to score them in advance. Writing families is notation and does not by itself produce fluency.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given 10 arrays or sets of three numbers that form a multiplication fact family (for example, 4, 6, 24), the student will write the two multiplication and two division facts for each family independently with at least 85% accuracy on fact families, on 3 of 4 consecutive probes, as measured by work-sample analysis collected every two weeks.

Baseline: 30% accuracy.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Work-sample analysis gives percent accuracy data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Multiplication & Division.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
