Solve facts with 0 and 1 as a factor or divisor

When to use this goal

For students who answer 6 x 0 as 6 or 7 / 1 as 1, which shows the operations are not yet understood as groups. This is a small, specific need; write it only when present levels show these facts are a persistent error source.

Baseline
Mix the 0 and 1 facts in with other facts so the student cannot answer by pattern. Note which case fails: times 0, times 1, divided by 1, or 0 divided by a number.
Tips
Build 6 groups of 0 and 6 groups of 1 with counters so the rules come from the action. Division by 0 is undefined; leave it out of the item set.
Limits
A narrow goal that may be better as a short-term objective under a fact fluency goal. Does not measure fluency.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given 20 mixed multiplication and division facts in which one number is 0 or 1, the student will write the correct product or quotient for each fact independently with at least 95% accuracy on facts with 0 and 1, on 3 of 4 consecutive probes, as measured by work-sample analysis collected every two weeks.

Baseline: 50% accuracy.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Work-sample analysis gives percent accuracy data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Multiplication & Division.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
