Find the total of equal groups of objects

K-2, 3-5OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who count every object one by one even when the objects come in equal groups (pairs of shoes, packs of 5, boxes of 10). Present levels in skip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s decide readiness.

Baseline
Record whether the student counts by ones or skip counts. A correct total from counting by ones is not yet the target.
Tips
Real objects in groups (egg cartons, sock pairs, marker packs) make the idea of a group concrete. This leads into arrays and repeated addition (ma-md-003, ma-md-008).
Limits
Limited to groups of 2, 5 and 10 at first. Does not measure writing multiplication equations.

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Data collection

Each planned or naturally occurring opportunity is recorded as correct/independent, prompted, or not demonstrated.

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given 2 to 6 equal groups of real objects in groups of 2, 5 or 10, such as pairs of socks or packs of markers, the student will skip count by the group size to find the total independently in at least 7 of 8 trials, on 3 of 4 consecutive sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.

Baseline: 2 of 8 opportunities.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Multiplication & Division.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
