Use doubling for 4s and 8s facts
When to use this goal
For students who know their 2s facts but count by 4s and 8s on fingers. Present levels in 2s facts and in doubling numbers to 50 decide readiness.
- Baseline
- Check 2s facts and doubling first; the strategy fails without them. Record the strategy used on each fact.
- Tips
- Teach 2s, then 4s, then 8s. Move strategy-solved facts into the timed probe once the strategy is quick.
- Limits
- Covers one strategy family. Doubling large numbers (2 x 36) is harder for some students than the fact itself.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, when given a multiplication fact with a factor of 4 or 8 that the student does not yet recall, the student will double the 2s fact to find the 4s fact, or double the 4s fact to find the 8s fact, and say the answer independently in at least 8 of 10 trials, on 3 of 4 consecutive sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected twice weekly.
Baseline: 2 of 10 opportunities.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Multiplication & Division.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Record up to 10 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
