Solve 9s facts with a tens strategy
When to use this goal
For students who know their 10s facts but find 9s hard to recall. Present levels in 10s facts and in subtracting a single digit from a multiple of 10 decide readiness.
- Baseline
- Record the method used (counting by 9s, finger trick, tens minus one group, recall). Finger tricks give answers without meaning; note them but they can count if the team agrees.
- Tips
- The tens-minus-one-group strategy is also mental math practice. The digit-sum check catches many errors.
- Limits
- Covers one fact family. The digit-sum check works only up to 9 x 10.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, when given a multiplication fact with a factor of 9 that the student does not yet recall, the student will find the 10s fact and subtract one group to find the answer independently in at least 8 of 10 trials, on 3 of 4 consecutive sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected twice weekly.
Baseline: 2 of 10 opportunities.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Multiplication & Division.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Record up to 10 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
