Select coins and bills to make a given amount
When to use this goal
For students who count money presented to them but cannot pull the right coins from a pile to pay an exact price. Present levels in counting mixed coins should be secure first.
- Baseline
- Give 10 amounts and record whether the total is exact, over or under, and whether the student checks by counting after selecting. Amounts ending in 5 or 0 are easier than amounts like 37 cents; include both.
- Tips
- Accept any combination that totals the amount; do not require the fewest coins unless that is the goal. Practice at a real register or school store when possible.
- Limits
- Exact-amount payment is less common in daily life than paying with bills and receiving change; see the next-dollar template for that. Requires real coins and observation.

- Record up to 10 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
