Draw a picture to solve a story problem

K-2OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who solve story problems with objects but have no strategy when objects are not available. Present levels in acting out problems with objects decide readiness.

Baseline
A trial is correct when the drawing matches the story and the answer is right. Record detailed drawings that take most of the time; quick marks are the target.
Tips
This bridges objects and numbers. Bar models (ma-ps-018) come later.
Limits
Drawing speed depends on fine motor skills; accept tallies or dots.

Skill

What the student will do

Something an adult can see, count or time.

Condition

When or under what conditions

Support

Support allowed

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Criterion wording

Data collection

Each planned or naturally occurring opportunity is recorded as correct/independent, prompted, or not demonstrated.

How often data are collected
Mastery rule

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given a one-step story problem within 20 and paper, with no objects, the student will draw simple marks or circles for the amounts, show the action, and write or say the answer independently in at least 5 of 6 trials, on 3 of 4 consecutive sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.

Baseline: 1 of 6 opportunities.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Math Problem Solving.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
