Follow shared-meal routines when eating out
When to use this goal
For older students who eat with peers, coworkers or in restaurants and want to take part comfortably, and whose mealtime routines (napkin use, waiting for others, chewing before talking) are still being learned. Fits students who self-feed; the student's own goals for eating out and observed meals, not grade, decide fit.
- Baseline
- Score two or three meals in the real setting. Ask the student which parts matter to them and which they find hard; a student who chooses the goal works on it. Chewing with lips closed can be hard with low oral tone or nasal congestion; check with the SLP or OT before scoring it, and drop that row if it is not a motor-ready skill for this student.
- Tips
- Teach these as shared social routines that help meals with friends and coworkers go smoothly, never as rules about a student being messy or rude. Give feedback privately. Role-play at school before community meals, and let the student set the reminder signal.
- Limits
- Food textures, liquid thickness, positioning for safe swallowing and any swallowing precautions come from the student's feeding or swallowing plan, which this goal never changes. Customs differ across families and cultures; agree the routines with the student and family. The rubric depends on rater judgment; score with the same rater when possible. Chewing patterns linked to oral motor needs are not a manners issue.

Goal
