Drink from a standard cup one-handed
When to use this goal
For students who drink from an open cup with two hands or a cut-out cup, and are ready for a standard cup or cafeteria cup held in one hand so the other hand is free. The feeding plan's liquid guidance and observed drinks, not grade, decide fit.
- Baseline
- Watch six drinks at two lunches and record each as one hand with no spill, two hands, spilled, or adult held. Note grip, how far the cup tips and whether the student watches the cup on the way down. Use only the liquid the plan allows.
- Tips
- One-handed drinking frees the other hand for eating, carrying a tray or holding a phone, and matches how peers drink. Fill cups halfway while learning. Wide-base cups are a fine long-term choice if spills keep happening.
- Limits
- Food textures, liquid thickness, positioning for safe swallowing and any swallowing precautions come from the student's feeding or swallowing plan, which this goal never changes. Students who drink thickened liquids or use a specific flow-control cup follow the SLP's guidance on cup type. The goal does not cover pouring or carrying a full cup.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during lunch, given a standard plastic cup half full of the drink allowed by the plan, the student will lift the cup with one hand, take a sip and set it back down upright without spilling, with no adult hands on the cup in at least 5 of 6 opportunities, on 3 of 4 observed lunches, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected at three lunches a week.

- Record up to 6 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
