Attach papers with paper clips and binder clips

K-2, 3-5OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who cannot slide a paper clip on or open a binder clip, so their papers come apart or an adult fastens them. Fit depends on a trial with classroom clips, not grade.

Baseline
Offer five stacks of 3 to 5 pages and score each clip: holds all pages, misses some, or needed help. Binder clips need more pinch strength; test both.
Tips
Real tasks (turning in work, packing a folder) are the best probes. This adds to the tool skills in mt-fm-014 (stapler, hole punch, tape).
Limits
Clip size and paper count change difficulty; keep them stable across probes.

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Data collection

Each planned or naturally occurring opportunity is recorded as correct/independent, prompted, or not demonstrated.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, when turning in a multi-page assignment, the student will slide a paper clip onto the corner of a stack of papers so it holds all pages independently in at least 4 of 5 trials, across 3 consecutive weekly sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly during classroom work.

Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

  • Observable behavior
  • Criterion
  • Measurement method

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Fine Motor Skills.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
