Get up from the floor and sit back down with control
When to use this goal
For students who need an adult's hand or a piece of furniture to get up from circle time, who drop to the floor rather than lowering themselves, or who take much longer than peers to stand when the class moves. Base the choice on observation at circle time transitions during baseline.
- Baseline
- Watch five transitions and record how the student gets up (hands on floor, furniture, adult, or none) and roughly how long it takes compared with peers. A student who uses hands on the thighs to push up is showing leg weakness the PT will want to know about; one who stands fine but slowly may be a motor planning issue.
- Tips
- Circle time gives several natural opportunities a day. The PT can teach a consistent sequence (sit to kneel, half kneel, stand) that classroom staff can cue with the same words. This supports safety on the playground and in PE as well.
- Limits
- Floor transitions are harder on a slippery floor or in bulky clothing; note the conditions. Students with orthopedic or neuromuscular conditions need PT guidance on safe methods, and the support level may stay at a hand on a bench.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, when the class moves from circle time to centers, the student will independently stand up from the floor without using hands on furniture or an adult in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weekly observations, as measured by direct observation collected weekly during circle time transitions.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Record up to 5 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
