Sit down in and stand up from a classroom chair with control

When to use this goal

For students who drop into chairs, miss the seat, pull the chair over, or need a hand to stand up from a desk chair, which happens dozens of times a day. Base the choice on observation of chair transitions during baseline; furniture fit should be checked first.

Baseline
Watch five sit-downs and five stand-ups and record control, hand use, and any help. Check that the student's feet reach the floor when seated and that the chair does not slide; a footrest or a chair with non-slip feet may solve most of it. Note whether the student looks back at the chair before sitting.
Tips
Classroom staff can observe this at any transition. The PT can suggest leg strengthening and a consistent cue sequence. This is a safety skill as much as a motor one; a student who drops into chairs can fall.
Limits
Chairs differ across the building (stools in art, benches in the cafeteria); name the chair in the condition. Students with significant motor needs may use adapted seating permanently. Does not measure sitting posture once seated.

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Data collection

An adult observes and records the defined behavior during a specified activity.

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, when moving from standing to sitting in a classroom chair at a desk, the student will independently sit down with control, reaching back for the chair and lowering without dropping in 5 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weekly observations, as measured by direct observation collected weekly during class transitions.

Baseline: 2 of 5 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Gross Motor Skills.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
