Copy notes from the board within the time limit

When to use this goal

For students who are still copying when the class has moved on, who lose their place every time they look up, or who copy only part of the board. Time the student against the class during baseline; the gap between the student and the class average decides fit.

Baseline
Time three board-copying tasks from the moment copying begins to when the student finishes, and time two classmates for comparison. Check the finished copy for omissions; a fast copy with half the words missing is not success, so set an accuracy threshold on the data sheet. Check whether seating distance or glare is part of the problem.
Tips
Copying the daily agenda or homework gives a natural daily task. If the gap does not close with practice, providing printed notes is an accommodation that should be in the IEP regardless of this goal. Vision should be checked before this goal is written.
Limits
Time alone does not measure accuracy; record both. Board text length varies by day, so compare only similar tasks. Many teams decide that printed notes are the right answer and use this goal only for short items like the homework assignment.

Criterion

How long a behavior lasts, from a defined start to a defined end.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Data collection

The length of time a behavior lasts is timed from a defined start to a defined end.

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given a three-sentence note on the board and the same time the class is given, the student will complete copying the note with all words present and legible independently within 4 minutes, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly observations, as measured by duration recording collected weekly during a board-copying task.

Baseline: 8 minutes.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Duration fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Duration recording gives duration data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Handwriting.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
