Write the alphabet at a rate of letters per minute
When to use this goal
For students whose handwriting is legible but so slow that they cannot finish written work or tests in the time given. A one-minute alphabet task during baseline gives a rate; compare it with a few classmates to see whether the gap is large enough to need a goal.
- Baseline
- Run three 1-minute alphabet timings on different days and count only legible letters in the correct order. Time two or three classmates once to get a local reference point; published norms vary by task and are not required. Watch for a drop in legibility as speed rises and set a legibility rule in advance.
- Tips
- The alphabet task removes spelling and composing so the rate reflects motor output. Pair this goal with extended time as an accommodation while the rate builds. If the rate stays far below peers after a term of practice, keyboarding is the next step.
- Limits
- Rate on an alphabet task overestimates real writing speed, where thinking and spelling slow the student further. Counting only legible letters requires a consistent judgment. Students with hand pain should not be pushed for speed without an OT review.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given a 1-minute timing and lined paper, with a direction to write the lowercase alphabet in order repeatedly, the student will write legible lowercase letters in alphabetical order independently at a rate of at least 35 letters correct per minute, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly timings, as measured by timed probes collected weekly on a 1-minute alphabet timing.
Baseline: 18 letters correct per minute.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Rate (per minute) fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Timed probes gives rate (per minute) data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Handwriting.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
