Write answers within the space provided on worksheets
When to use this goal
For students whose answers run off the line, spill into the next question, or are squeezed and illegible at the end of a box. Base the choice on a count of answers that fit the space on class worksheets during baseline.
- Baseline
- Score three worksheets and count answers that stay in their space and remain legible. Check whether the student's letter size is the cause (see the letter size template) or whether answers are simply longer than the space; the second is a planning issue, not a motor one.
- Tips
- Most class work qualifies as a sample. Enlarged worksheets are a common accommodation; the goal is to reduce how much enlargement is needed. Teach the student to look at the space before writing and to shrink size when the space is small.
- Limits
- Answer length depends on the question; a long answer in a short space is a fair reason to run over. Does not measure the correctness of answers.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given a worksheet with answer lines or boxes for short responses, the student will write each answer within its line or box, with the whole answer legible independently with at least 90% accuracy on answers written within the space provided, on 3 consecutive weekly work samples, as measured by work-sample analysis collected weekly from class worksheets.
Baseline: 50% accuracy.

Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Work-sample analysis gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Handwriting.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
