Copy desk-model text at a steady rate
When to use this goal
For students who copy accurately but so slowly that they cannot finish classwork, or who rush and lose legibility. Near-point copying rate is a practical measure of handwriting speed. Fit depends on a timed probe at the student's level, not grade.
- Baseline
- Give three 2-minute probes on different days, count letters that are readable and in the right place, divide by 2, and use the median. Score legibility with a simple rule (a stranger could read the letter) so the rate does not reward scribbling.
- Tips
- Compare the rate with classmates on the same probe to set a functional target. If the rate stays low after good instruction, keyboarding or speech-to-text may be the better path (mt-hw-018, mt-hw-026).
- Limits
- Copying rate does not show composing speed. Visual memory and reading level affect copying; use text the student can read.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given a 2-minute timed copy of grade-level sentences from a card on the desk (total divided by 2 for the per-minute rate), the student will copy the text onto lined paper with each letter readable and in the right order independently at a rate of at least 25 letters correct per minute, on 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by timed probes collected weekly.
Baseline: 12 letters correct per minute.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Rate (per minute) fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Timed probes gives rate (per minute) data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Handwriting.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

Most district systems have a separate box for each part of a goal. Copy them one at a time, or all at once as labeled text.
