Set the paper slant for left-handed writing

K-2, 3-5OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For left-handed students who hook the wrist over the line, smudge their work, or tire fast because the paper sits straight or slants the wrong way. Fit depends on observed setup and comfort, not grade.

Baseline
Watch five writing starts and record paper angle, position, and wrist position. Note smudging on work samples, which is an easy outcome to track.
Tips
Seat left-handed students so their elbow does not bump a right-handed neighbor. Pencils with smudge-resistant lead and spiral notebooks opened on the left side help.
Limits
Hooking may stay for some students and still work; comfort and legibility matter more than one posture. Not relevant for right-handed students, who slant the other way.

What the student will do

Something an adult can see, count or time.

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Criterion wording

Data collection

An adult observes and records the defined behavior during a specified activity.

How often data are collected

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, at the start of each writing task at the desk, the student will turn the paper so the top tilts to the right and place it left of center before writing independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weekly checks, as measured by direct observation collected five writing tasks per week.

Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Handwriting.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
