Label bins and boxes readably at work
When to use this goal
For older students in vocational programs who label boxes, bins, shelves, or inventory sheets that coworkers misread. Fit depends on job-site work samples, not grade.
- Baseline
- Ask a coworker or adult to read 10 labels from 3 feet away and count correct reads. Note marker type; thick markers often help.
- Tips
- All-capital labels are common in workplaces and often easier to read. A label maker is a fine alternative when the job allows it.
- Limits
- Distance reading depends on lighting; check in the real space. Does not measure accuracy of the information.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given a marker and 10 storage bins or boxes to label from a list, the student will write each label in large, clear letters that a coworker can read from 3 feet away independently with at least 90% accuracy on labels a coworker reads correctly from 3 feet away, across 3 consecutive work sessions, as measured by work-sample analysis collected each work session, checking 10 labels.
Baseline: 50% accuracy.

Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Work-sample analysis gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Handwriting.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
