Add or remove prosthetic socks for fit
When to use this goal
For students with a lower-limb prosthesis whose limb volume changes during the day, so the socket becomes loose or tight, and who wait for an adult to notice. Present levels, not grade, decide fit. The prosthetist decides the sock range for this student.
- Baseline
- For two weeks, note each time staff saw a fit problem (limping, pistoning, the student mentioning pain) and whether the student had already adjusted the socks. Ask the student and family how often fit changes on a typical day. Weight-bearing limits, wearing schedules and equipment settings come from the student's physician, orthotist or prosthetist and the PT plan, never from this goal.
- Tips
- Count each time a fit change happened as one opportunity, whether the student or an adult noticed it. Spare socks at school are part of the plan. Older students take this skill into work and college.
- Limits
- Pain, skin breakdown or a big change in fit needs the family and prosthetist, not more socks. Opportunities depend on the day, so counts vary. It does not cover putting the prosthesis on.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, when the socket feels loose, tight or painful during the school day, the student will notice the change, go to a private space, and add or remove a prosthetic sock within the range the prosthetist set, then tell an adult if the fit is still wrong independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weeks, as measured by frequency recording collected daily, from the student's log and staff notes.
Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Record up to 5 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
