Grasp class materials with an arm prosthesis
When to use this goal
For students with an upper-limb prosthesis (body-powered or myoelectric) who leave it in their bag or use only the other hand for two-handed tasks. Present levels and the prosthetist's training plan, not grade, decide fit. Many students with limb differences do well without a prosthesis; this goal fits only when the student and family want to use it at school.
- Baseline
- Watch six two-handed tasks in class and OT and record whether the student used the prosthesis to hold, used another strategy that worked, or did not finish. Ask the student how they prefer to do each task. Weight-bearing limits, wearing schedules and equipment settings come from the student's physician, orthotist or prosthetist and the PT plan, never from this goal.
- Tips
- Count each two-handed task as one opportunity. Honor the student's choice: a one-handed method that works is a success, and the plan can say so. Coordinate the terms used with the prosthetist and family.
- Limits
- Not for students who do not wear a prosthesis by choice. Device fit and battery or cable problems look like skill problems; check the device first. It does not cover putting the prosthesis on.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during an art or science task that needs one hand to hold and the other to work, the student will open and close the terminal device to grasp and hold the item while the other hand works, then release it independently in at least 4 of 6 opportunities, on 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by direct observation collected weekly during OT and in two class activities.
Baseline: 1 of 6 opportunities.

Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Mobility Equipment Use.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Record up to 6 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
