Travel job-site routes with a mobility device
When to use this goal
For students 18 to 21 in a transition program who use a wheelchair, walker or cane and are starting work-based learning, where routes, carts and coworkers create new barriers. Observed shifts at the real site decide fit.
- Baseline
- Walk the site with the student and PT to find barriers, then record six trips on the routes, noting delays and who helped. Ask the employer what can change (a cleared aisle, a closer work station).
- Tips
- Teach the student to ask for reasonable changes at work, such as a cleared aisle, as part of self-advocacy. Fade the job coach as soon as routes are safe so the student works like a coworker.
- Limits
- Employer layout and safety rules come first. The goal covers the route, not the job tasks. A new site needs a new baseline.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during a work-based learning shift at a store, office or warehouse, the student will travel the job-site route using the mobility device, moving around carts and coworkers and reaching each stop on the route with no job coach cues in at least 5 of 6 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weeks, as measured by direct observation collected on six route trips a week.
Baseline: 2 of 6 opportunities.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Functional Mobility.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Record up to 6 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
