Walk or jog continuously for a set number of minutes
When to use this goal
For students who stop within the first minute or two of a PE warm-up run, sit out of endurance activities, or tire during the walk between classes. Use a timed continuous walk or jog during baseline to decide the starting target; a nurse or physician should clear any student with a health condition before targets are set.
- Baseline
- Time continuous movement from the start signal to the first stop on three different days and use the median. Record pace (walk, jog, mixed) and what the student did when stopping, since standing still and sitting down mean different things. Check with the nurse for any activity restrictions before setting the target.
- Tips
- Most PE classes start with a warm-up, so the data come free. Build time in small steps (one minute every two weeks is reasonable). Allow the student to choose walk or jog so the goal measures endurance, not speed. Students who use wheelchairs have a propelling version in this skill.
- Limits
- Minutes without stopping does not show intensity; add a heart-rate condition for older students if the team wants that. Weather and surface change results on outdoor tracks. Medical conditions may cap the realistic target.
