Complete laps of the track or gym in a set time
When to use this goal
For students who complete far fewer laps than peers in a timed fitness activity, or who cannot pace themselves and stop after a fast start. Base the choice on a counted lap trial during baseline; this complements the continuous-minutes template when distance is the class measure.
- Baseline
- Count laps on three days with the same course and time; use the median. Note whether the student stops or slows to a walk and whether a pace partner changes the count. Make sure the lap length is the same every time (same lane, same course).
- Tips
- Many schools already run a timed lap activity; use its format. A lap card gives the student ownership and makes counting reliable. Keep the course identical; a gym course and a track lap are not comparable.
- Limits
- Lap counts reward speed and can push a student to sprint and stop; pair with the continuous-minutes template if pacing is the issue. Partial laps are not counted; decide the rule for the last lap in advance.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given a 10-minute timing on the school track, the student will complete laps of the course by walking or jogging independently at least 7 times per 10-minute timing (laps completed), in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly timings, as measured by frequency recording collected weekly during PE.
Baseline: 3 times per 10-minute timing (laps completed).

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Frequency fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Frequency (event) recording gives frequency data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Physical Fitness & PE Participation.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Count each occurrence of the defined behavior per 10-minute timing (laps completed).
- Keep the observation length the same each session. If it varies, compare rate per minute, not raw counts.
- Write the behavior definition at the top of the sheet so all data collectors count the same thing.
