Perform curl-ups in one minute
When to use this goal
For students whose core strength limits sitting posture, floor transitions, and PE fitness activities, and who complete few or no curl-ups in the class fitness assessment. Use a counted one-minute trial with the form criteria written down to decide the starting target.
- Baseline
- Run one timing on each of three days and count only repetitions meeting the form criteria; use the median. Note whether the student stops because of fatigue or loses form early. Check with the PT about neck or back concerns before counting curl-ups for students with orthopedic conditions.
- Tips
- Use the same form rules as the class fitness assessment so the student's score counts in class. Core strength supports sitting and transitions in the classroom; name that purpose in present levels. Short practice sets several times a week build the count faster than one weekly test.
- Limits
- Counts in one minute depend on the form rule; write it on the data sheet. Does not measure endurance beyond one minute. Students with certain medical conditions should not perform curl-ups; get clearance.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given a mat and a 1-minute timing during the PE fitness unit, the student will perform curl-ups with the shoulder blades lifting off the mat and returning each time independently at least 15 times per 1-minute timing, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly timings, as measured by frequency recording collected weekly during PE.
Baseline: 4 times per 1-minute timing.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Frequency fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Frequency (event) recording gives frequency data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Physical Fitness & PE Participation.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Count each occurrence of the defined behavior per 1-minute timing.
- Keep the observation length the same each session. If it varies, compare rate per minute, not raw counts.
- Write the behavior definition at the top of the sheet so all data collectors count the same thing.
