Stay in a PE activity for its full length
When to use this goal
For students who leave the activity area, sit on the sideline, or stop participating partway through a game or station, whether from fatigue, difficulty with the skill, or discomfort with the noise and movement. Base the choice on timing participation during baseline; the cause should shape the supports.
- Baseline
- Time participation from the start of the activity to the first exit lasting more than 30 seconds, on three days. Ask the student and watch for the cause: lost, tired, overwhelmed, or unable to do the skill. Each calls for a different support and the goal should name the one that works.
- Tips
- The adapted PE teacher sets the modifications (lighter ball, smaller area, simplified rules) before class so they are in place, not added when the student struggles. This goal is about access; pair with a specific skill goal if the student leaves because the skill is too hard.
- Limits
- Minutes in the area does not show effort or skill. Sensory causes (noise, crowding) may need an OT or school psychologist's input rather than more time in the gym. Activities differ in length; name the activity type.
