Complete a shuttle run within a time limit

When to use this goal

For students who are slow to change direction, who fall or overshoot the line when turning, or whose shuttle run time is far outside the class range. Base the choice on a timed shuttle run during baseline; agility supports every chasing and dodging game in PE.

Baseline
Time two trials on each of two days and use the median. Note where time is lost: slow turns, stopping to pick up the block, or a slow run between lines. Each points to a different drill. Keep the course length and markers identical.
Tips
Most fitness assessments include a shuttle run, so the format is familiar. Practice turns separately. For students with balance concerns, the PT may set a wider turning area or allow walking turns at first.
Limits
Hand timing has about half a second of error. Surface and footwear change times; note them. Students who use mobility devices need a propulsion version designed by adapted PE.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given a 30-foot shuttle run course with two blocks to carry, during the PE fitness unit, the student will independently complete the shuttle run, touching or carrying each marker as required, without falling within 15 seconds, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly trials, as measured by duration recording collected weekly during PE.

Baseline: 22 seconds.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Duration fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Duration recording gives duration data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Physical Fitness & PE Participation.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?
