Record fitness scores in a log and compare with the last entry

6-8, 9-12OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

Fits secondary students who have no idea what their fitness scores are, cannot say whether they are improving, or do not take part in the class goal-setting that fitness programs expect. Base the choice on reviewing the student's current log use during baseline; it combines fitness with self-monitoring.

Baseline
Check the student's log for the last five fitness activities and count entries that are complete and accurate. Ask the student to read the last entry and say whether it was better or worse than the one before; this shows whether comparison is possible without help. Keep the log format simple.
Tips
Fitness logs are standard in many secondary programs; adapt the class log rather than making a separate one. The weekly entry takes a minute at the end of class. Goal setting can use a simple frame: 'Next week I will do ___ more.'
Limits
Logging does not change fitness by itself; pair with an endurance or strength goal. Students who cannot read numbers need a picture or bar log. Does not measure whether the personal goal was reasonable.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, after each weekly fitness activity in PE, given the student's fitness log, the student will record the score or minutes for the activity in the log and compare it with the previous entry independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive monthly reviews, as measured by direct observation collected weekly from the fitness log, reviewed monthly.

Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
