Take part in music and movement activities for the full song
When to use this goal
Fits preschool students who sit, wander, or watch during music and movement time, or who join for a few seconds and leave, missing the main physical activity of the preschool day. Base the choice on timing participation across three sessions during baseline; the cause (motor, sensory, or social) shapes the supports.
- Baseline
- Time participation (in the group area and doing at least some of the actions) during three sessions. Note whether the student leaves when the music gets loud, when the actions get hard, or when attention shifts; those suggest sensory, motor, or engagement supports. A preferred prop is a quick support to try.
- Tips
- Movement time happens daily in most preschools, so twice-weekly timing is easy. Keep the songs familiar during data weeks. Pair with the imitation goal in gross motor if the student does not copy actions, and with sensory supports from the OT if noise is the barrier.
- Limits
- Minutes in the activity does not capture quality of movement. Young children vary day to day; use 4 of 5 sessions rather than every session. Songs differ in length; name the activity length in the condition.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during a music and movement activity with the teacher modeling the actions, the student will participate in the movement activity, doing the actions along with the group independently for at least 5 minutes, on 4 of 5 consecutive observed sessions, as measured by duration recording collected twice weekly during movement time.

- Start timing when the defined behavior begins and stop when it ends, using the definitions agreed by the team.
- The goal is reached when duration is at least the target (5 minutes).
- Note interruptions that weren't caused by the student.
