Wash hands using their sensory choices

PK, K-2OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For young children who avoid handwashing or get upset at the sink because of water temperature, soap texture, the sound of the dryer or the feel of paper towels. Present levels and the sensory profile decide fit.

Baseline
Record five handwashing times and note what part is hard (water, soap, dryer noise). Offer each alternative and see which the child chooses.
Tips
Skipping the dryer and using foam soap are easy, lasting accommodations. Handwashing steps can be added through a daily-living goal.
Limits
Hygiene rules come first; offer alternatives that still clean the hands. The goal does not cover the handwashing steps themselves.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, at handwashing times before snack, after the restroom and after messy play, the student will wash hands using their chosen options, such as warm water, foam soap, a cloth towel or skipping the hand dryer with no adult prompts in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weeks, as measured by direct observation collected daily at two handwashing times.

Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Sensory Processing & Regulation.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
