Swing a bat with side-on striking form
When to use this goal
For students who can hit a ball off a tee with a chopping or one-handed swing but do not yet turn sideways, step and rotate. The student's current swing pattern on the rubric, not grade, decides fit. A lighter, wider bat or a larger ball is a fair choice while form develops.
- Baseline
- Score the skill on the rubric across at least 3 PE sessions before setting a target, filming a few attempts if the family and school allow it so two scorers can agree. Score each component from what is seen, not from whether the ball went where it should. Note bat weight and ball size so later probes use the same set-up.
- Tips
- Score the median of the five swings, or the best three of five, and say which in the plan. Move from the tee to a soft underhand toss only once the step and rotation show up on the tee. Students who use a wheelchair can be scored on the grip, trunk rotation and level swing rows, with the step row replaced by a forward lean.
- Limits
- The rubric scores form, not contact or distance; a student can score well and still miss the ball. Tossed balls add timing and tracking demands that the tee does not test. It does not cover fielding or base running.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given 5 balls on a batting tee set at waist height during a striking unit, the student will swing the bat with a side-on stance, hands together, a step toward the target and a level swing through the ball independently, earning a score of at least 6 out of 8 on a 4-component two-hand striking rubric scored 0 to 2 per component, in 3 of 4 consecutive biweekly probes, as measured by a defined scoring rubric collected every two weeks during striking units.
Baseline: 3 out of 8 rubric points.
